When Patriarchy Silently Wins: A Girl is Trapped between Dream and Duties

Yesterday, I met one of my relatives a married woman with five children. Years ago, she was among the brightest students in her science class: confident, talented, and full of promise. She had teaching experience, awards in extracurricular activities, and dreams that could have reshaped her community.

Her marriage was arranged not forced and her husband’s family, though educated, belonged to the category of “average awareness.” After marriage, she was not stopped directly from working, yet she was never really allowed either. Domestic responsibilities, child-rearing duties, and household expectations quietly filled every hour of her day.

Yesterday, as she spoke, tears rolled down her cheeks. “I sometimes feel I lost myself,” she said softly. Her words were not of rebellion they were the silent cry of a woman trapped between her dreams and her duties.

This is not an uncommon story. In many patriarchal societies, women’s sacrifices are not demanded explicitly they are expected naturally. A woman’s education is celebrated only until her marriage. After that, the same education that once symbolized empowerment becomes a forgotten chapter.

This silent surrender is not about illiteracy or oppression in its loudest form. It’s about a cultural system that conditions women to give up their ambitions gracefully, believing it is part of their virtue.

Educating girls is not just about classrooms and degrees it’s about giving them the lifelong agency to make choices, to pursue passions, and to sustain their individuality beyond familial roles. Society often measures a woman’s success by her capacity to adjust, compromise, and sacrifice. But real progress will begin when we measure it by her ability to continue evolving intellectually, emotionally, and professionally even after marriage.

Every girl deserves the right not just to study but to stay relevant, to keep learning, and to be herself.
